A ação se passa dentro de um teatro, onde um ator e duas atrizes que iriam se encontrar para ensaiar “O Jardim das Cerejeiras”, acabam, meio sem querer, se abrigando do massacre que acontece nas ruas e que será o estopim da revolução que acontecerá posteriormente no país. Uma das atrizes trancada dentro do teatro é a primeira atriz do famoso Teatro de Arte de Moscou. Sentindo-se incapaz de representar, depois da morte do marido por tuberculose acontecida há seis meses, e na tentativa de seguir vivendo – enquanto lá fora a cidade desaba –, Olga instiga Masha e Aleko a encenarem repetidamente junto com ela a morte de Tchekhov.
