O título lembra algo de Schopenhauer e não estará errado. Na verdade, ao contar a história do Centro de Demolição e Construção do Espetáculo, que atuou nos anos 90 no Rio de Janeiro sob a direção de Aderbal Freire-Filho, o autor flerta com a filosofia. O coletivo de artistas que se engajaram nessa aventura tinha alguns princípios básicos: ocupar um espaço histórico para um programa integrado de teatro; desenvolver, num trabalho continuado, as pesquisas cênicas de um diretor brasileiro; valorizar o conhecimento científico da arte teatral através de estratégias prático-teóricas: ensaios abertos, oficinas, seminários, conferências; contribuir para o aprofundamento das discussões sobre a peste do teatro brasileiro, convidando artistas de teatro do Brasil para debates, conversas e discussões; convidar o teatro da América e de outros mundos para Copacabana. Não deixa de ser um projeto filosófico no seguinte sentido: seu objetivo era o de revolucionar práticas e dogmas sedimentados na base cênica de montagem de espetáculos e discutir o passado, o presente e o futuro do teatro. Começou em 1989, no Teatro Gláucio Gill, e terminou em 1994, no Teatro Carlos Gomes. Aderbal conta a lenda de que Derrida saltou na Estação Cardeal Arcoverde do metrô, entrou no teatro e interrompeu o ensaio de A Mulher Carioca aos 22 Anos para dizer, rindo, que aquilo era pura desconstrução, uma desmontagem, um entendimento novo. Mas o diretor é bem mais comedido: entende o Centro como expressão do conceito simples de que o teatro constrói sobre ruínas, sobre demolições. Cada Hamlet é levantado toda noite sobre demolições de Shakespeare. Ao longo de sua trajetória de seis anos, muitos artistas participaram ou foram convidados: Márcia Duvalle, Cláudio Marzo, Othon Bastos, Rogério Fróes, Domingos de Oliveira, Ana Luísa Cardoso, Paula Feitosa, Carmen Frenzel, Leonardo Netto, Xando Graça, Gillray Coutinho, Caíque Ferreira, Dudu Sandroni, Chico Diaz, Orã Figueiredo, Thiago Justino, Lídia Kosovski, entre outros. Quem pensa que Aderbal começou a reproduzir em cena romances na íntegra e não originais diretamente escritos para o teatro há pouco tempo está redondamente enganado. A estreia do Centro de Demolição em 1989 foi justamente com A Mulher Carioca de 22 Anos, um romance de João de Minas. A experimentação (mais ou menos) recente de O Púcaro Búlgaro, romance de Campos de Carvalho, é apenas a continuação natural dessa experiência. O livro de Antonio Carlos Bernardes é ricamente ilustrado por fotos, maquetes, croquis e cartazes dos espetáculos encenados pelo Centro de Aderbal, com fichas técnicas e resenhas (nem sempre positivas) dos críticos da época.
