Na década de 80, não passava um só dia em que ele não figurasse nas páginas da grande mídia com provocações, artifícios e casuísmos. Para estar na berlinda, valia tudo: lançamento de uma nova peça, entrevistas bombásticas na Folha de S. Paulo, que lhe dava guarida inclusive quando não tinha nada para dizer, workshops, leituras, conferências, debates, enfim, qualquer coisa. A crítica especializada não tinha sossego e se dividia, mas é inegável que Gerald tinha seu valor, particularmente em seus primeiros espetáculos (4 Vezes Beckett e Electra Concreta) onde ele instituiu uma linha de pensamento coerente com seus conceitos e um método (se é que podemos dizer assim) bastante revolucionário, além de quebrar vários paradigmas do fazer teatral e guindar ao primeiro plano a atriz Bete Coelho, sua musa durante algum tempo, até ser substituída por Fernandinha Torres, com quem se casou (também durante algum tempo). Fez um pouco de tudo: escreveu, dirigiu e mostrou a bunda num espetáculo alternativo no Teatro Municipal, quando recebeu uma ensurdecedora vaia que o consagrou para a posteridade. A partir disso, se mandou para Nova York, local onde desenvolve seus trabalhos até hoje. As últimas informações dão conta que anda fazendo experiências teatrais com John Paul Jones, ex-baixista do Led Zeppelin. Agora, lança um livro com a reunião das peças escritas e montadas no Brasil e no exterior. A obra apresenta os textos integrais de 24 peças acompanhadas de suas respectivas críticas de época, e traz ainda ensaios da organizadora Adriana Maciel, do jornalista Dirceu Alves Jr. e da professora de teoria do teatro Flora Süssekind. O livro configura-se como o mais completo em língua portuguesa sobre a profícua produção autoral desse dramaturgo brasileiro, abrangendo até mesmo o texto de sua peça mais recente, Dilúvio, encenada no Teatro Sesc Anchieta no final de 2017. Os textos teatrais escritos por Gerald Thomas emolduram a vivacidade dos atores em cena. Organizá-los em um único volume é um registro importante da força da palavra no palco, sem que seja somente ela a motriz de um diretor inquieto, provocador e tão importante para a história do teatro brasileiro. Criado pela Tuut Design, o projeto gráfico do livro tomou como ponto de partida uma declaração de Gerald Thomas que define uma peça de teatro como um organismo vivo. Segundo ele: “Quando o ator respira, o público está respirando junto, então o nosso pulmão atinge o pulmão do público. Logo, o teatro funciona como um órgão enorme, um coração, por exemplo, que inspira e expira, e o público inspira e expira junto com o ator. Isso faz com que o teatro se transforme em um pequeno universo”. O conceito adotou uma estética que transmite ousadia e experimentação. A lombada do livro fica exposta quando a capa é aberta, revelando que a marca desse projeto é sua estética visceral na exploração das partes para formar um todo que traduza a sua essência. Atualmente Gerald Thomas está preparando Gastrointestinal Prayer, um solo com a atriz Lotte Andersen que estreia em Copenhagen, em março de 2020. Para o Brasil, ele está escrevendo uma nova peça inspirada em Rembrandt, prevista para estrear em São Paulo no segundo semestre de 2020.
